A tope de power!! : )

mil besos

Unit 1. The start of the Modern Age. The 15th and 16th centuries

Hi everybody!!

We are starting a new unit. For the week 16-20 March you can get started with the project about the discovery of America (bottom).

E-mail me with any questions.

1. Unit presentation

Title

The start of the Modern Age. The 15th and 16th centuries

Unit description

This unit on the Modern Age starts by presenting the changes in the international panorama and the political, economic, social, cultural and artistic aspects in relation to the Middle Ages. Firstly, it looks at the geographical discoveries, their causes and the resulting extension of the known world. It then moves on to address the main changes brought on by the Modern Age in Europe: the birth of the modern State, demographic growth, economic growth, social changes, the collapse of the religious unity of the Catholic Church caused by the Protestant Reformation and the Counter-Reformation launched by the Catholic Church. The characteristics of Humanism and its architectural, sculptural and artistic contributions to the Renaissance are also studied. In the ‘Techniques’ section, proposes working with historical time to reinforce students’ understanding of space and time in history, a topic they have already worked on in previous years.
The various activities presented throughout the unit are designed to help students to acquire knowledge on the following:
-  The Modern Age. Changes in the 15th and 16th centuries.
-  The discoveries (I). Causes behind the process.
-  The discoveries (II). Journeys and travellers.
-  The birth of the modern State. The authoritarian monarchies.
-  Economic transformations and social changes.
-  Change and religious conflicts. Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
-  Humanism. The new vision of mankind.
-  The Renaissance in Italy (I). Architecture.
-  The Renaissance in Italy (II). Sculpture and painting.
-  The Renaissance beyond Italy
-  Working with historical time.
-  Development of the core competences.

  1.  To know the dates marking the beginning and end of the Modern Age and to have a global view of the changes that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries.
  2.  To understand the Age of discoveries.
  3.  To show the importance of the birth of the modern State.
  4.  To assess the demographic, economic and social transformations that occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Project: The discovery of America. Due date: March 27th.
You will have to do some research about the discovery, its protagonists, features, etc.
After that you will have to fake the social media (Twitter, Facebook or similar) of the following protagonists:

- Cristopher Columbus
- Juan II, king of Portugal
- Isabel I of Castilla
- Fernando II of Aragon

You will have to be able to cover the main aspects that explain:

- Which parts of the world were known to Europeans at the end of the 15th c. (before the discovery)?
- Which and how was the project of Columbus?
- Why did he visit Juan II and what answer did Columbus get from him?
- Did Isabel I show any interest for his project? why?
- What important project was Isabel undertaking herself when Columbus visited her?
- What pact did Columbus make with the monarchs?
- How was the trip organised?
- When and how was the trip done?

- Presentation and creativity are important. Find pictures, maps and proper language. Try to make it fun, it will be much more interesting.

This project will be turned in printed on paper. You can either do it individually or in a group of no more than four people working in the distance, of course. If you chose to make it in a group your grades will be as follow: the group will decide which one of you gets 2 extra points, which one of you gets 1 extra point.

This was an option before we had to go home due to the virus but I don´t think we can make it, do you???
((There is a special option on this project for those of you who take "Teatro". Those of you who want to could do the research and after that make a short play covering all these areas in the most creative way. Grades will be given in the same way.))

Tips: read what you can find on the web about the discovery and the protagonists before starting. You need to know the context and protagonists very well. By doing so you will probably find everything you need to know.
