  1. UNIT PRESENTATION

Title

The tertiary sector. Spaces and activities

Unit description

This unit begins with a presentation of the activities of the tertiary sector in which their different forms of classification and the distribution of services in the world today are presented. This is followed by an in-depth study of the main activities of the sector. The ‘Transport’ section deals with global networks and the different land, sea and air transport systems, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each and their situation with respect to the transport of passengers and freight, with special attention to intermodal transport and telecommunications. The ‘Tourism’ section analyses the main types and tourist areas throughout the world; the economic, demographic, social and environmental effects of this activity; and new tourism policies. ‘Commercial activities’ addresses the elements that form it, its development, the types and spaces of domestic trade, and the organisation and areas of foreign trade. The ‘Technique’ section of the unit on carrying out and presenting a geography assignment in class allows knowledge to be extended and research and information communication competences to be developed.
The various activities presented throughout the unit are designed to help students acquire knowledge on the following:

Activities:
1. Define tertiary sector.

2. What activities does it include?

3. What would you say that is the main difference with the other two sectors of the economy?

4. We are going to pay attention to the classification of services according to who delivers them:
a) Compare which is the objective of both public and private services.
b) Compare how public and private services are paid.

5. Read 1.3 in your book.
Compare the tertiary sector in both developed and underdeveloped countries by making a table or a mind-map.

6. Regarding transport differences between developed and underdeveloped countries are huge. Just take a look at the highways in Africa. Now look at the map in page 183 in your book "Transport" in Europe.

7. Tourism is one of the most important services today.
a) Read point 5 in your book and make a mind-map with the positive and negative effects it has.
b) Which solutions are taken to diminish the negative effects it has.

8. Read point 6 of your book. Make a very simple table with the features of commercial activities in the pre-industrial era/industrial era/today.

9. Read point 7 in your book. What is a wholesale trader? and a retail trader?
This picture corresponds to "Mercamadrid". Find what it is and explain what they are dedicated to.

10. Foreign trade

You need to learn this

Foreign trade involves:
- the purchase of goods abroad = imports
- the sale of goods abroad = exports
These figures are recorded in a document called: balance of trade (balanza comercial)
When imports are greater than exports we say the balance is negative
When exports are greater than imports we say the balance is positive

a) Which situation do you think is better for a country, a positive or a negative balance of trade? Explain the reasons.

11. There are some organisations that seek to promote foreign trade

You need to learn this

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) which seeks to eliminate or reduce tariffs and arbitrates in trading disputes. It is working really hard to fight some protectionist measures that countries adopt to eliminate foreign competition.

Find out:  What is a protectionist measure? give some examples.

12. Trade in the European Union (from unit 8)

You need to learn this

The European Union has formed a trade bloc and has become (among other things) a customs union (unión aduanera)

This means:
1- That there is free movement of merchandise, capital and services (paying no tariffs) among the countries that belong to it.
2- That they all share common tariffs for products imported from other countries.

a) Why do you think 1 is important for the member countries?

13. Some other trading blocs:
You need to learn this

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for Canada, United States and Mexico.
